SUMMARY:
This work was carried out on 50 apparently healthy buffaloes (5-8 years old) belonging to the research farm of Animal Reproduction Research Institute at late stage of gestation (220 days) till 60 days postpartum. According to ultrasound, metabolic profile, gynecolog¬ical examination, and hormonal assays, animals had been classified into two groups. The first healthy group (n= 41) and the second sub-clinical fatty liver group (n= 9). Animals with sub-clinical fatly liver showed tendency to the absence of estrous signs that reflected poor ovarian activity. Their metabolic profile tests revealed significant decrease in levels of glucose, total protein, albumin, cholesterol and triglyceride and some of the enzymes related to liver function showed insignificant elevation in their levels including alkaline phospha¬tase and gamma glutamyl transferase while a significant increase in serum alaninamino-transferase. aspartateaminotransferase and bilirubin was found. The serum hormonal assays revealed a significant decrease in estradiol-17B concentration and insignificant decrease in progesterone, triiodothyronine (T3) and Thyroxine (T4). The ultrasound could differentiate between animals in late gestation with normal homogenous echogenic hepatic parenchyma and others with heterogenous hyperechogenic hepatic parenchyma. It is concluded that sub¬clinical fatty liver does not only impair the liver function but it is also reflected on both ser¬um hormonal and biochemical analyses. This had unfavourable consequences on hormones related to reproduction and predisposing to some reproductive disorders such as poor ovari¬an activity and unobserved heat.
