SUMMARY:
Trials were conducted to evaluate the influence monensin supplementation on ovarian actlivity of cycling native breed ewes by laparoscopic detection. Total eight healthy mature ewes (2 — 3 years ) was randomly allocated into two groups: the first group served as control group ( n= 4 ), the second group ( n=4 ) were supplied with monensin sodium ( 30 mg/head/day) from zero day at oeslrous till day 15 of oeslrous cycle. The results revealed that concentration of LDL, cholesterol and glucose significantly increased during days 9, II, 15 of oestrus cycle while concentration of HDL did not vary among the two groups. Moreover, monensin supplementation reduced estradiol-17β during days 9, 11 and 15 of oeslrous cycle; conversely, progesterone concentration was signilicanlly higher at day I I on oeslrous cycle. Regarding to insulin concentration, it increased significantly during days 9 and 15 of oestrous cycle. Laparoscopic examination was carried out on days zero and 7 of the next oeslrous cycle, thc result indicated that ovulation rate of the teated monensin ewes were higher significantly than that of (he control one. inaddition, follicular development of the monensin- trealed ewes, showed significantly increase in the number of small, medium and large follicles in comparison to the control. It can be concluded that laparoscopic detection showed elevation in ovulation rate and number of ovarian follicles in ewes treated with monensin. Meanwhile, moncnsin supplementation increased glucose, insulin, LDL and cholesterol during the late phase of the oeslrous cycle.
