English : A Trial to Decrease Incidence of Gastro-Enteritis in Mixed Breed Calves Fed on Milk Rcplaccr
Abstract Summary: Twenty eight mixed breed calves were fed milk replacers containing either antibiotics( MRA" oxytetracycline at 138 mg / kg and neomycin sulphate at 276 mg / kg " , n = 14 ) or Biogen ( MRB," a blend of allicin, probiotics and a hydrolytic enzyme at 150 mg / kg, n = 14 " ) from birth to 5 WKs of age to study effects on average daily gain and on incidence of scours . Performance was evaluated by measuring weight gain, blood ,biochemical assay and | fecal scores . The average daily weight gains of calves fed MRA was less than of calves fed MRB from WK 2 and become greater during the WK 5 ( 0.50 vs. 0.54 kg / d p = 0.05 ) . Severity of scours was measured by fecal scores and some blood parameters, including concentration of serum proteins , an indirect measure of immunoglobulins , these indicative measures were similar for calves fed MAR and MRB without any signifant changes .There were no differences between the 2 groups of calves in data readings of liver and kidney functions without any adverse reactions .This experiment provides evidence that growth and performance of preweaned calves receiving probiotics and allicin may be viable substitutes for antibiotics in milk replacer to obtain better calf performance . (Abbreviation key: MRA= milk replacer containing antibiotics ,MRB= milk rcplaccr containing Biogen).
