English : The suitability of some leafy vegetables as hosts for the cotton leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.)
Arabic : ملاءمة بعض الخضراوات الورقية كعوائل لدودة ورق القطن Spodoptera littoralis(Boisd.)
Abstract Survival, development and fecundity of the polyphagous ínsect, Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) (Noctuidae : Lepidoptera) were compared on different leafy vegetables as host species. Larval development was faster on lettuce, caboutchíe and castor bean. The lowest development was for larvae fed on the three Brassica varieties. The length of the sixth instar larva was longer on lettuce (3.94 cm) and shorter on brussel sprouts (2.24 cm). The highest larval mortality was observed on red cabbage. The two chenopodiaceous species (Spinach and Swiss chard) and mallow were of moderate preference for the insect.
