English : Susceptibility of ten potato cultivars to infestation by some leaf pests and control of Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) in store

Abstract The susceptibility of ten potato cultivars to infestation by whiteflies, red spider mites, aphids and potato tuber moth (PTM) was studied during two summer seasons and two winter seasons of 2004 and 2005 at Barrage Horticultural Research Station, Qalyubiya Governorate. Resulls obtained show that Aramous cultivar (cv.) is charactenzed by a moderate infestation by whiteflies and aphids during both summer and winter seasons with high number of PTM and high yield. Blanche cv. was the least infested by whiteflies (2.80 and 6.13 ind./leaf) during both summer seasons, and also red spider mite infestation was low during both winter seasons of the two years (1.20 and 1.60 ind./leaf). While, Silvester cv. showed low infestation by whiteflies during both winter seasons (28.60 and 37.86 ind./ leaf) and red spider mite during both summer seasons (0.60 and 0.93 ind./leaf), while Seniora cv. was less infested by aphids during both summer and winter seasons. The infestation of PTM leaves was detected more on Silvester cv. and less on Armada and Simon (0.66 and 0.93 ind./ leaf), while tuber Volva cv. was the least infested cultivar. The yield was high for Simon cultivar dunng all tested seasons, followed by Armada and Aramous cvs. While Blanche cv. gave a low yield. The store experiment, showed that Volva cv. was the best one in store because it was less infestated by PTM (0.33 and 0.66 ind./tuber) for 2004 and 2005 years. Also, the use of dry leaves of aromatic plants such as Eucalyptus canaldulensis and Artemisia monospermae gave good results during the fírst year and in 2nd year the two plants gave the same effect as Dipel-2X bacterial insecticides. So, the aromatic plant had a repellent effect on the PTM, those plants used in the experiment were easy to prepare and to use for protecting table tubers.
