Efficiency of amonium chloride as a control agent agaevst Varroa mite infesting honeybee colonies

Abstract |
The present study was carried out to evaluate the efficiency of amonium chloride (4%) as a control agent against Varroa mite infesting honybee colonies. The experment was performed in the apiary of Beekeeping Research Department at Zagazig, Sharkia govemorate during August - December 2004. The subesquent effect of applying amonium chloride, formic and oxalic acids for controlling Varroa mite in honeybee colonies on hoarding behaviour was also investigated. The data could be sammarizd as follows :
Applying amonium chloride (4%) at the rate of 20 ml/colony spraying between combs; formic acid (60%) 15ml/colony obsorbed in cardbourd plates (5 x 20 cm) placed on the top bar of brood combs at dusk and oxalic acid (5%) 20ml/colony spraying between combs caused sharp dicline in Varroa mite infestation where recording 88.5%, 94.45% and 86.83% reduction in the rate of infestation, respectively. The respective mean numbers of fallen Varroa mite after 24 hrs of each treatment recorded 626,880 and 585 mites / colony .
Using formic acid (60%) was more effective, however the number of dead bees reached 92 bees / colony, while it recorded 6 and 8 bees/colony treated with amonium chloride and oxalic acid, respectively .
The mean amount of hoarded sucrose syrup (1 : 1) by honeybee colonies treated with amonium chloride, formic and oxalic acids were 538.33, 598.33 and 516.67 ml/colony during 4 hrs from offering the sucrose syrup to the colonies, respectively, realizing 154.33%, 182.67% and 144.09% increase over that of the control collonies (211.67 ml /colony)
On the light of the obtained results it is advisable to make use of such safe and less expensive natnral materials to control Varroa mite infesting honeybee colonies to avoid the appearance of mite resistant strains and products pollution .
