Abstract |
Potato is considered one of the most important vegetable crops in Egypt. The cultivated area of potato is estimated about 197 thousand feddans in 2002 representing about 13% of the total planted area with vegetables. Potato also has great importance as an export crop. The total amount of potato exported in year 2001 was estimated at 185 thousand tons valued at 117 million LE representing about 6% of the total value of the Egyptian agricultural exports.
The potato crop is subject to a wide range of pests, which reduce yield and quality. The potato tuber moth (PTM) is considered the most serious potato insect pest in Egypt. Potato losses due to PTM can be devastating, sometimes reach 100%. Potato growers still rely heavily on chemical insecticide use in storage routinely, little concern for the safety of consumers and the impact on environment. The utilization of the bioinsecticides, (Bt) and Granulosis virus (GV), and mineral oil were reported environmentally safe and.in the same time more effective for the PTM control and economically much cheaper than the chemical ones.
The study results shows that the microbial PTM control methods was economically and ecologically efficient more than the chemical control method in both filed and store. It is obvious that the maximum gain was about 1.27 ton valued at 753.56 LE per feddan in the case of Bt Delfin. Also the study showed that the maximum gain in the case of Bt Dipe12X was about 2.79 ton valued at 1674.38 LE per feddan/output stored (on the average). It is obvious that the total gain at the macro level also was estimated at 276.13 million LE for that treatment if all output was stored. The gains from storing 75%, 50% and 25% of total output were estimated at 215, 143 and 72 million LE respectively in addition to the gains from applying the microbial PTM control in the field. The benefit cost ratios were computed, the microbial PTM control were 10.95 and 6.14 and for GV, Bt Dipel 2X respectively compared to 2.04 for chemical control.
