Abstract |
The population size of the black cutworm, Agrotis ipsilon (Hufn) was assessed in Qualubia Region over 4 successive years using a light trap. The population density was obviously larger in 1986 than in the other three tested years i.e. 1984, 1985 and 1987. The majority of moths occurrence in the field took place during the cold months of the year. The simultaneous effect of cer¬tain weather factors was studied. The maximum daily temperature and night minimum temperature demonstrated a significantly and negative effect on the population changes of moths. The averages of each of these climatic fac¬tors were accordingly around the optimum (21.43 - 7.64°C). It could be con¬cluded that, the less the night minimum temperature the high the popula¬tion density of black cutworm moths obtained. For the relative humidity, the general effect seems to be withi nthe optimum zone for the flight activity (65.23%) hence it expressed an insignificant positive activity (65.23%) hence it expressed an insignificant positive effect during the tested period. When the combined effect of these weather factors was estimated during the main period of activity, it was found that the thermal weather factors governed the population activity to a great extent.
