Abstract |
Melatonin, MLT, (N-acetyl- 5 – methoxytrptamin) is a hormone that is synthesized and secreted from the pineal gland mainly during darkness. Extrapineal MLT production was found to be also Synthesized in at least three other structures: the retina, the Harderian gland, and the gastrointestinal tract. Circadian rhythms are synchronized to the 24- hour day primarily' by light - dark cycles. In poultry. various workers found that the range of plasma MLT concentration was lower during Ihe light period (40 - 100 pg / ml) and higher (3 to 7- fold) during the dark period ( 150 - 390 pg / ml). The elevated plasma MLT concentration in the dark period of a light dark cycle is considered to be essential for regulating the time of oviposition in the laying hen under a particular light regime. Evidences of various investigations reveal that MLT is involved in many physiological functions of poultry. Most studies found that MLT depresses feed intake an improves feed conversion, but its effect on body weight is not consistent among published papers. Also it has been reported that MLT improves growth performance by influencing growth hormone secretion. In addition, MLT is a Powerful antioxidant with high free radical scavenging activity and also stimulates the activity of several enzymes related to the antioxidant defense system Furthermore. MLT plays an important role in circadian thermoregulatory adjustments of body temperature. Melatonin enhances the immune response and counteracts immune deficiency status resulting from stress. Also, MLT was found to reduce gonadal activity by inhibiting LH secretion.
This article reveal that further examination of the mechanism through which MLT acts in regulating the physiological function of poultry to understand the role of MLT in improvement of poultry performance.
