Abstract The adapted Egyptian strain of pigeon pox virus in tissue culture(VERO) was used for preparation of specific pox vaccine for pigeons. The titre of this virus was 105.4 TCID50/ml. The virus fluid was tested for pathogenicity in pigeons where it induced an acceptable post vaccinal reaction. The protective dose was estimated and found to be 1000 viral particles/dose (103TCID50/dose). The virus fluid was lyophilized after addition of an equal volume of lactalbumin sucrose stabilizer and the recorded titre of the lyophilized vaccine was 105.0 TCID50/ml in VERO cells. In addition, it was found that such vaccine was free from the foreign contaminants, safe and potent. The duration of acquired protection obtained by such vaccine also revealed that the vaccinated pigeons withstood the challenge with virulent pigeon pox virus up to 7 months post vaccination (period of study). The humoral antibody level in the serum of vaccinated pigeons was measured by serum neutralization test (SNT) which proved that the induced pigeon pox antibodies had 1.3 neutralizing index (NI) from the 1st week and reached its (2.2 NI) at 3rd week post vaccination.
