English : Survey of stored grain insects infesting stored crops in the Middle Delta of Egypt
Abstract Investigation carried out during the period from March 2003 to February 2004, showed that the most important insect species infesting the stored crops in the Kafr EI-Sheikh, Dakahlia, Gharbeya and Menoufeya governorates, at the middle delta are; Sitophilus oryzae (L.), Sitophilus granarius (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Rhizopertha dominica (F.) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae), Tribolium confusum (Duv. (Coleoptera- Tenebrionidae), Sitotroga cerealella (Oliv.) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), Oryzaephilus surinamensis (Coleoptera-Cucujidae) and Bruchus rufrmanus(Boh.) (Coleoptera : Bruchidae). A relatively higher number of S. oryzae & T. confusum was observed during January and February at Kafr El-Sheikh, Dakahlia, Gharbeya and Menoufeya on wheat. Gradual increase was observed in the number of S. oryzae on barley and rice throughout the following months at Kafr EI-Sheikh. S. oryzae reached maximum number at Kafer El-Sheikh and Dakahlia in November and December on maize, but there was a few numbers at Gharbeya and Menoufeya. However, this insect had the highest number in all governorates on wheat when compared with the other insect species. The reached average numbers were 149, /kg. in Kafr El-Sheikh, 300 in Dakahlia 343.42 in Gharbeya and 43.0 in Menoufeya. Maize in all governorates was the highest crop containing different species of stored grain insects. The highest number of R. dominica average 236.1 insects/kg was found on wheat variety Sakha-93 at Gharbeya. The number of T. confusum increased in wheat flour of Gharbeya when compared with the other governoraie. Also, three species of stored grain insects in barley rice at Kafr El-Sheikh: S. oryzae, R. dominica and T. confusum averaged 8.5, 65.17 and 9.9 insects, respectively. Faba bean was free from Bruchus rufimanus in Kafr EI-Sheikh and Menoufeya governorates; however, it was obviously infested by the previously mentioned species in Dakahlia and Gharbeya, where infestation averaged 10.3 and 7.75 insects/kg., respectively
