Role of the aphelinid parasitoid, Encarsia lounsburyi (Berlese & Paoli) (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) in controlling armored scale insects (Homoptera: Diaspididae) in Egypt, with a list of host range and distribution

Abstract |
Through a survey conducted during 2003 and 2004, the parasitoid, Encarsia lounsburyi (Berlese & Paoli) was reared from 14 species of armored scale insect. These are Abgrallaspis cyanophylli (Signoret), Aonidiella aurantii (Maskell), Aspidiotus nerii Bouche, Chionaspis stantophri Cooley, Chrysomphalus aonidum (Linnaeus), C. dictyospermi (Morgan), Diaspis echinocacti (Bouche), Fiorinia fioriniae (Targioni¬Tozzetti), Hemiberlesia lataniae (Signoret), Insulaspis pallidula (Green) , Insulaspis beckii (Newman), Lineaspis striata (Newstead) , Mycetaspis personata (Comstock) and Parlatoria blanchardii (Targioni-Tozzetti). Population abundance studies of Encarsia lounsburyi were carried out, during July 2003- July 2004, in seven locations in Egypt (Behira, Beni-Suef, Gharbiya, Giza, Ismailia, Minufiya, Qalyubiya and Sharqiya). The highest rate of parasitism attained with Chionaspis stantophri was found to be 41% in Gharbiya . The results indicated that Encarsia lounsburyi was the effective parasitoid attacking some armored scale insects in Egypt
