English : Seasonal variation in libido, semen quality and freezability of sohagi rams in egypt
Abstract The aim of the present study was to evaiuate the effect of season on the sexual behavior, semen quality, testosterone profile and freezabiiity of Sohagi rams raised in Sohag. Experimental Farm, Fac. Agric., Sohag Univ. to facilitate breeding programs. Ten sexually mature Sohagi rams were used in this study. Semen was collected biweekly for 12 successive months from each ram. Blood samples were taken from the jugular vein of all rams twice monthly during the experimental period for determination of serum testosterone concentration. During the experimental period libido test for each ram was implemented twice monthly. Semen characteristics (ejaculate volume, initial motility, percentages of live and abnormal sperm) were estimated. Sperm cell concentration (xl09/ml) was determined and sperm output (xl09/ml) was calculated. sohagi Rams demonstrated the highest sperm concentration (P<0.05), the highest libido expressed in the highest numher of ejaculation and shortest time, the highest sperm conccntration and output, and the highest overall mean of testosterone concentration during summer season comparied with the other three seasons summer and spring seasons were best for live normal sperm output per ejaculate (4.61and 2.87X 109 sperm/ejaculate, respectively). Overal1 means of post-thaw motile sperm cel1s during summer, autumn, winter and spring were 52.8, 46.2, 30.8 and 46.5%, respectively. post-thaw motility showed significant differences (p<0.05) among seasons of the year. Winter season, col1ected semen was less tolerant during the process of freezing than the other three seasons. 1t could be concluded that the summer season seems the better season for reproductive performance of sohagi rams at Sohag Governorate.
