Agricultural Extension Workers Awareness of Medicinal And Aromatic Plants Production and Export in Menia Governorate

Abstract |
The study aims at determining the agricultural extensionists awareness of medicinal and aromatic plants production and export in Mina Govemorate, and the independents variables which have a relationship with their awareness, in addition to identify the main constraints faced the respondents during their work in the mentioned Field and their suggestions for developing the agricultural extension role in this aspect.
Data were collected during June,2006 from a number amounted to 164 agricultural extensionists in Minia Govemorate by personal interviews, using a pretested questionnaire. Frequencies, Percentages, Arithmatic mean, Standard deviation, Chi square and Simple correlation were used for data analysis.
The main results of the study were as follows :
(l)About 52.5% of the respondents have high awareness of the medicinal and aromatic plants production and export, while 40.2% of them have a moderate Awareness, and 7.3% of them have a low awareness; (2)There was a positive significant relationship at level 0.01 between the respondents awareness of the medicinal and aromatic plants production and export and six independent variables included; study specialization, numbers of working years in the mentioned field, number of training courses, Salary satisfaction, Degree of dependency upon personal group and mass extension communication methods; (3)There was a positive significant relationship on level 0.05% between the respondents awareness of the studied plants and five independent variables included : rural originality, the studied plants cultivation,of the degree of modernization, number of extension methods used and degree of dependency upon group extension communication methods; (4) The major constraints faced the respondents during their work in the studied plants production and export included: the export agencies are unknown, lack of information about the plant cultivation and maturity for export and unavailability of the extension methods; (5)The major suggestions of the respondents for developing the extension role in the studied plants cultivation and export were: providing training courses for extension workers on how to convince the farmers, recruiting specialized extension staff of the studied plants and provide them with resent informations, increasing the number of extension demonstration fields, increasing the extensionists salaries, and providing the extension offices with the plants production facilities and improved seeds.
A corroding to the study findings some recommendations were deducted to increase the Medicinal and Aromatic plants quantity and quality for export.
