English : The There'd Research Clinio- Pathological Studies On Camels Infested With Mange & Ticks
Abstract Three hundred & ten (Tick & mange infested camels), 105 of them were female & 180 were male animals, & 350 (healthy camels) one humped camels (Camelus dermedarius) of different ages (2-10 years) & sexes were examined at Al- Basatem abattoir during the period from October, 2004 to October 2005 to study the cliniopathological & pathological changes in mange & tick infested camels. They were examined clinically & the gross lesions were recorded. Older camels were more susceptible than younger individuals. Mange mites were more prevalent with higher intensity in females than male camels' meanwhile tick infestation was more prevalent in males but females had higher burden. Contarary to ticks, the highest rate of mites infestation was recorded in winter while lowest was in summer. Two blood samples from each camel were collected for hematological & biochemical analysis such as aspartate aminotransferase (AST), Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) & alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activities. Specimens from the affected skin were subjected for histopathological examination. Skin scrapings & tick were taken for parasitological examination. Normocytic normochromic anaemia was the hallmark of tick. Infestation with mites revealed microcytic hypochromic anaemia. Two infested groups showed leucocytosis accompanied by lymphocytosis & eosinophilia. Proteinogram showed hypoproteinaemia consequent to hypoalbuminaemia & hyperglobulinaemia. The activity of serum enzyme (ALT & AST) showed no significant effect due to mite & tick infestation while ALP enzyme activity showed a significant decrease in male infestation only. Macroscopic changes in sarcoptic mange consisted of localized erythema & crust formation in the initial stage but later on, the affected skin was much thickened & loss of hair. Microscopic changes consisted of invasions of sarcoptic mites to the epidermis along with acanthosis, hyperkeratosis & parakeratosis. The dermis showed infiltration of lymphocytes, cosinophils & mast cells. Ticks were mostly found sheltered all over the body surface characterized by hyperemia with small nodules & crust centered around tick. Microscopically, hyperkeratosis, acanthosis & erosion were illustrated. The dermis showed diffuse & nodular aggregation of inflammatory cells mainly mononuclear cells with some eosinophils, few neutrophils & macrophages. The present study is to investigate the clinical, haematlilgical, biochemical & pathological changes in infested camels with mites & ticks.
