Abstract The effect of gamma irradiation on some biochemical aspects including total protein as well as enzymes activity of alkaline phosphatase and non-specific esterases in homogenates of the American bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) adults emerged from irradiated pupae at 10-days old (1-2 days before eclosion) were evaluated. The obtained results indicated that total protein contents in adult females are more than the adults males. Gamma irradiation increased the total protein contents in both sexes. There were gradual increase in the total protein contents with increased dosages of gamma irradiation till 300 Gray. The adult female stage resulted from either irradiated or unirradiated pupae recorded higher levels of alkaline phosphatase activity than the adult males. Gamma irradiation dosages increased the levels of alkaline phosphatase activity in both sexes as compared the unirradiated adults. Data obtained showed general similarity of the trend concerning with the non-specific esterases activity in both adult males and females emerged from either irradiated or unirradiated pupae.
