Abstract |
This Investigation was conducted to evaluate the effects of diatomaceous earth dust against some stored product insects, namely the adults of Sitophilus oryzae (L.); Rhizopertha dominica (F.) and Tribolium castaneum (Herbst. ) as well as the active and diapausing larvae of Trogoderma granarium (Everts.). Tests were carried out in the laboratory under at 26±10C arid 50-60% RH. Datomaceous earth dust (DE) was mixed with the grains at 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8% w/w concentrations. Katel-sous dust (KS) was used at 0.5 and 1 % for comparison. The results revealed high to complete mortality one and two weeks after treatment with the different concentrations of DE for the adults of S. oryzae and R. dominica. The mortality values achieved at 0.4% were obviously higher than K5 at its recommended rate of 1%. Thus, DE at 0.4% could be effectively applied as grain protectant against the two insect species. Nevertheless, its effect against the adults of T. casteneum, active and diapausing larvae of T. granarium was clearly reduced. However, it was significantly more effective than KS at its recommended rate especially at the higher concentrations. Thus, it could be applied at the highest rate (0.8%) to control the experimental insects.
