| Abstract |
: Some ecological and biological aspects of the Egyptian weasel Mustela nivalis subpalmata had been run under conditions of different habitats. Population density of weasels markedly differed from location to another and wide fluctuations were observed throughout the year seasons (2000, 2001). The highest number of weasels was recorded during summer season while the lowest number was recorded during winter season. On the other hand the ratio of caught females to males differed from month to another and in all cases males outnumbered females. Percentage of pregnant females reached the maximum in December, 2001 (70%) and average number of embryo per female ranged between 3.2 and 5 embryos. Pregnant females were not recorded during the period from June to September months. The relative preference and feeding behavior of weasels for three categories of food materials i.e. alive animals, meat types and grains mixed with blood were examined using non-choice and choice feeding methods. The results of both methods showed that the preference of these food materials could be arranged in descending order according to male weasel consumption as follows : alive chicken fledglings > beef liver > chicken meat > alive house sparrow> beef blood > fish > chicken eggs > beef meat > maize grains mixed with blood > broad bean grains mixed with blood > alive land snails > corned beef. Slight differences in this order could be detected in case of female weasels.
