Abstract |
In this study foals under the age of one year showed symptoms of suppurative bronchopneumonia . Rhodococcus equi was revealed from 20 out of 33 clinically infected foals (60.6%) The isolation of the organism from clinically infected cases was most apparent from nasal exudate specimens 54.4%) and faeces 45.5% whereasisolation from the blood was revealed only from 21.2% In apparently healthy foals, R. equi was isolated in lower frequencies . from nasal swabs (15.2%) and from faeces (13%) . R.equi was only isolated from the blood of clinical cases (21.2%) The SDS-PAGE analysis of R. equi surface antigen revealed the presence of the Vap-Antigen Thevexpression of Vap-A was less Prominant in isolates from apparently healthy foals In the detection of antibodies in the sera from clinical cases and apparently healthy foals by ELISA AND immunoblotting, variable results were obtained There was 8 casesthat had on OD >1.2 (29.9%) , WHILE 5 Cses (18.5%) had on OD value of 0.3-0.6The OD values of positive cases from apparently healthy foalsranged from 0.3-0.6(85.7% ) while 2 cases (14.3%) hadon OD R. equi isolates were susceptible to to erythromycin Regular physical, bacteriological and serological examination of foals and treatment of diseased cases with erythromycin and rifampin, could eliminate R. eqyi infection .
