Knowledge and implementation of rural pregnant women to the healthy and nutritional practices during pregnancy in one village in Fayoum governorate

Abstract |
This study aimed at determining knowledge and implementation level of rural pregnant women to the healthy and nutritional practices during pregnancy, determining the significant difference between means of the knowledge and implementation degrees of both health and nutritional practices during pregnancy, comparing the daily intakes from some nutrients to pregnant respondent women with the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI) , identifying the correlation relationships between some independent variables and knowledge and implementation degree of healthy, nutritional practices, and the daily in takes from some nutrients . Data were collected by personal interviews using a pre-tested questionnaire from a random sample amounted to 90 pregnant respondent women visiting the health unit in kasr Reshwan village in Fayoum governorate. (t ) Test, simple correlation coefficient, means, standard deviation, in addition to frequencies and percentages were used for data analysis statistically.
The most important results included the following:
• The mean age of respondents was 22-51 years old, the mean of educational years was 3.34 years, the mean of pregnancy period was 5.62 months, the mean of number of previous pregnancies was 1.9 and the mean of inter pregnancy interval was 2.43 years.
• Knowledge level of respondents was moderate to some healthy practices such as calcium intakes, avoiding to take aperient in status of constipation, and avoiding to visit any one suffer from contagious disease. While the level of implementation relatively low regarding calcium intakes practice and was moderate for tablets of iron, avoiding sitting with smokers, and avoiding stress and tension.
• The level of knowledge was moderate to some nutritional practices such as: in take small and several diets, in take legumes, increasing the protein in takes, and avoiding well cooked food, while the level of implementation was low to in take molasses, increasing the protein in takes, in take small and several diets and avoiding well cooked food.
• There were significant relationship with each of age of respondents, period of marriage , number of children, mean of income, number of previous pregnancies, inter pregnancy interval, period of pregnancy and number of pregnancy following and the degrees of knowledge and implementation of healthy and nutritional practices, and daily intakes of nutrients .
