Abstract |
this was an attempt to identify the servere effects of commensal bacteria on fish fecundity Aeromonas hydrophila was isolated from apparentiy healthy Orechromis niloticus ovaries testes livers fry and unfertilized eggs
bacterial infection caused decrease of males fertility represented in significant drop of : Sperm density live spermatozoa %males gonadosomatic index ( Lg) Osmolality and Na concentration the testes were seen congested with atrophy or absence of some spermatogenic stages
females fecundity was also highly impaired through significantdrop of relative fecundity absolute fecundity gonadosomatic index ( Lg) hepatosomatic index ( Lh) conddition factor ( k ) and total protein ( t.p ) level
this study was the first to throw light on the dangerous multiple effect of A.hydrophila through affecting gonads of breeders thus decreasing their fecundity being transmitted to unfertilized eggs causing their immaturity and finally affecting the fry by increasing their mortality the authors recommend early detection of bacterial carriers and sanitary culture systems as the only way for obataining free breeders with highly efficient fecundity
