Abstract |
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of feeding whole maize silage ration with different levels of feed intake on the production; reproduction and some body measurements of Egyptian crossbred Friesian heifers (ECFH) during the first services till just before calving. Twenty four heifers at the first services were divided randomly into four feeding groups (six animals each) and received their experimental rations at a rate of 2(R1), 2.5(R2) and 3 % (R3) of their live body weight (LBW) feed dry matter (DM), while the control group (R4) according to NRC (/996) allowances. Roughage to concentrate ratio was 70:30. Ages and live body weight at the beginning of the experimental were (16.3; 14.8; 14.0 and 14.8 months old and 308.0; 307.4; 302.0 and 304.8 kg body weight, for RI; R2; R3 and R4 groups, respectively.
Results indicated that animals fed 3% of their LBW achieved the highest digestibility coefficients of most nutrients and the highest feeding value as TDN compared to other feeding groups. While, CF digestibility and feeding value as DCP were significantly (p<0.05) higher by heifers fed control rations (R4). Also, animals received 3% of their LBW (R3) recorded the highest,(p<0.01) body weight before calving; the highest total body weight changes and the highest daily body gain over the 1st service to conception; conception to 6 months of gestation and during the whole experimental period. While, the body weight at conception and 6 months of gestation were almost similar among animals fed the different experimental feeding plans. In addition, animals fed (R3) tended to be shorter (p<0.01) regarding age at conception and just before calving and due to the oestrous cycle length. in comparison with the other rations. However, the heifers of (R2) was higher (p<0.05) at the conception rate (CR) of the 151 and 2nd services than those of other treatments
Estimating relative economic efficiency, showed that the heifers fed (R3) recorded the highest value of relative daily gain efficiency and age in the whole period compared to those fed low feeding level (RI). In addition, the heifers fed (R3) had the most expensive cost value compared to those fed (RI) which showed the lowest feed cost.
It could be concluded that feeding pregnant Egyptian crossbred Friesian heifers on (R3) which consisted of 70% corn silage: 30% CFM, on DM basis had a beneficial effect on improvement of production and some reproduction performance but feed conversion and production costs increased with increasing feeding level.
