English : Agricultural Extension Agents Training Needs In Horticulture Crops Area

Abstract This study aims at determining the training needs for village extension agents to assist in designing training programs which provide knowledge and horticultural technical skills to overcome problems facing them. This study was conducted in Qualyobia governorate. Data were collected by personal interviews to 253 Extension workers representing 34% of the total population. The main results could be summarized as follows: The knowledge needs of respondents were high or moderate for tomato land preparation (61.1%), crop servicing (65.3%), pests and diseases (72.4%), quality characteristics (76.8%). But for Citrus production: land preparation (68.4%), crop servicing (65.2%), pests and diseases (62%), quality specifications (78%). About two thirds of respondents (68.6%) had negative or neutral attitudes towards their work in horticulture extension. Five independent variables explained (66%) of the total variance of the dependent variable for tomato crop as follows: job satisfaction level, number of training courses, degree of exposure to mass media, and the degree of innovativeness. But for citrus crops, six variables interpreted the variance (72%). These variables were: level of satisfaction, number of training courses, degree of cosmopolitness, degree of innovativeness. Five variables explained the variance of their attitude level towards horticulture extension with (70%). These variables were: level of job satisfaction, number of training courses, age, degree of innovativeness, degree of cosmopoliteness. The main constraints facing respondents in training programs were: trainee's poor comprehension for the training content in the horticulture area, insufficient references and illustrated publication during training, insufficient of training time.
