Abstract |
The effects of antibiotics on physiological traits were studied on 24 buffalo calves with average weight of 40.53± 0.10 kg. Animals were divided randomly to four groups (6 animals each). They were reared on their mother's milk and calf starter. Calves of the first group (G1) second group (G2) and third group (G3) were administered Oxytetracycline ,(OTC), Erythromycin (Erthro) and sulphadimidine (sulpha) respectively. The fourth group (G4) is the control group. Results revealed that weight gain was significantly affected (p < 0.05). No significant differences were observed in milk consumption for calves of all groups, but, there were significant differences in calf starter for (G3 and G4).
Blood parameters were significantly reduced (P < 0.05) total protein, albumin, globulin and its ratio in G3 and G4), liver function and kidney function.
Residues of antibiotics and sulphadimidine used for treatments were detected in some heart, liver, kidney and muscles samples below Maximum Residues limits (MRL) recommended by FAO/ WHO (1999).
