Abstract xylazine and medetomidine were compared clinically haematologically and biochchemically as preanaesthetic to sodium thiopental in dogs 0 four equal groups (5 dogs) were used in this study all dogs were premedicated with atrpine sulphate. the first grup was njected with 25 g/kg bdy weight sddium thipental and the last three groups by 10 mg/kg body weight, where doge were premedicated by 1 mg . the duration of anaeathesia before and after maintenance, recovery time and clinical signs were recorded in all groups.rectal temperature,respiratry and heart rates decreased and group IV shwed a significalnt and the mean value of blood PH showed slight significant increase followed by significant decreases.
