Abstract Indigenous knowledge is local knowledge. It is knowledge that is unique to a given culture, or society. Indigenous knowledge contrasts with the international knowledge system generated by universities, research institutions, and private firms. It is the basis for local level decision making in agriculture, health care, food preparation, education, natural resource management, and a host of other activities in rural communities. Indigenous knowledge is a cultural component passed down from generation to generation, in many societies, by words of mouth, or verbal communication. Each society has mechanisms through which indigenous knowledge provides the basis for group decision making and overcoming some aroused problems. Each society has its own means in disseminating and transferring indigenous knowledge whether it was generated within the society or outside its borders. Indigenous knowledge is exposed to changes and modification in its time transfer from generation to generation. It provides adaptable, low cost, and proper solutions for different development problems. Despite the distinguished importance of indigenous knowledge, it was ignored for decades by policy makers, particularly in the developing countries. This was obvious in agricultural extension sectors relied completely on formal university knowledge system. The Egyptian Agricultural Service does not only ignore indigenous knowledge but it also ignores non-qualitative research methods used in conducting extension researches including observation, ethnography, and other qualitative ones. The main objectives of this research were: to identify indigenous knowledge; to identify some indigenous knowledge used by farmers in the Egyptian aquaculture system; to discuss some ways of integrating aquaculture indigenous knowledge with the Egyptian agricultural extension system; and to raise some suggestions to be raised to policymakers in this regard. The research data were collected during the period 2005-2006. Participatory observation, face-to-face interviews and visits. ethnographic description, and anthropological practices were used in collecting the research data. The research methodology, findings, and recommendations were explained in detail.
