English : Extension needs of mango farmers in new lands at Ismailia governorate

Abstract Mango crop has an important position among other fruit crops cultivated in New Lands at Ismailia Governorate. Nevertheless it was noticed that Mango feddan production keeps around half of average production in old lands, which alight be a result of less information and implementing skills recommended for producing and marketing by farmers. This situation encouraged the researcher to carry out this study : to find out farmers needs from information and skills related to recommendations of producing and marketing practices, to find out relation of these needs with farmers, characteristion and to determine problems facing extension services to solve them. All these may help to build up pointers of planing and implementing extension program for mango farmers in the study area. Data has been collected from 400 fanners from 9 villages belong to 3 administrative districts (3 villages each district) which are mango cultivation areas in Ismailia goveniorate. These districts are : Ismailia, Qantara Ghat-6 and Qantara Shark. Data were collected using personal interview and a prepared questionnaire. Results were analysed using percentage.#-- frequency tables, means, simple correlation and "Z" test. Important results of the study were : A. Knowledge needs of the studied farmers There is a highly knowledge need for the most of the studied farmers for recommendation related to one cultivation practice which is diseases and pest control. -2 There is a medium knowledge need for the most of the studied farmers regarding recommendations related to 7 cultivation practices arranged as follows : grading, preparing holes for planting, grafting, harvesting, packaging, transportation and selecting suitable soil for cultivation. There is low knowledge need for the most of the studied farmers regarding recommendations related to 7 cultivation" practices arranged as follows : weed control, planting distances, pruning, fertilization, irrigation, fruit selection and hoeing. B. Implementing need for the studied farmers : - There is a highly implementing need for the most of the studied farmers regarding recommendations related to 4 cultivation practices arranged as follows : Packaging, diseases and pest control, fruits grading and grafting. - There is medium implementing need for the most of the studied farmers regarding recommendations related to 9 cultivation practices arranged as follows : weed control., transportation, preparing holes for planting, harvesting, planting distance, fertilization, pruning, irrigation and fruits separation. - There is a low need for the most of the studied farmers regarding recommendation related to one cultivation practice which is hoeing. - There is no need to the studied farmers for recommendations related to two cultivation practices arranged as follows : selecting varieties and planting time. C. Relationships There is a relationship between knowledge need and implementing need levels for the studied mango farmers and exposing to cultivation information sources in producing and marketing crop and each of independent variables of age and educational level in producing practices recommendations and also producing and marketing practices recommendations. There is no relationship between knowledge and implementing needs levels for the studied farmers and each of mango cultivated area and involving level in rural organization of crop producing and marketing practices. D. Farmers information sources : The studied mango farmers information sources could be arranged as follows : friends and neighbours, extensionist, and agricultural cooperative director. E. Farmers problems : The most problems facing the studied farmers could be arranged as follows : high prices of fertilizers., pesticides, and packaging, high transportation cost, dealers block mail and infestation by fungal disease. F. Extension services : Agricultural extension system offer its services to a limited percentage (33.75%) from the studied farmers and most things they do are holding extension. meetings, distributing pamphlets and transferring new experiences. The studied farmers prefer the following services: Offering information about exportation, supervising mango cultivation and nurseries, offering mango seedlings with suitable prices. According to study results nine recommendations were deducted to improve producing and marketing mango crop in the area.
