Abstract |
The main problem of sustainable agriculture production in Africa is (hat Africa is a continent in crisis . This crisis stems from the inability to produce enough toed; per capita food production is lower than two decades ago, Developments have adversely affected sustainability such.
1. Rapid population growth averaging 3.1 percent annually, the highest in the world, vis-a-vis 1.2 percent in food production.
2. Seriously degrading, environmental 6onditlons caused by increasing intensity of cultivation overgrazing, uncontrolled burning of vegetation, deforestation urbanization, industrialization, and other
pressures of modernization.
3. Increasing reliance on In arts of food and inputs under very adverse economic conditions of escalating debt burdens resulting from food import bills, loans. For development program, rapid decline in commodity price and foreign exchange earnings.
4 Endemic political instability causing inconsistencies and deficiencies
in strategies and development programs.
According to the .situation in Africa we, have formulated the following aims of the studs:.
1 - To document the extent and location of present unsustainability .
2- To measure the actual economic, social and ecological results of currently practiced technologies and economic arrangements.
3- To provide guidelines for people at the farm, the community and the national level begin to visualize the long; .. term, large-scale effects of today's decisions.
4- To challenge present narrowly defined indicators of agriculture success .
5- To enhance the level of international discussion and the flow of information on sustainable agriculture .
6 - To identify agriculture research and extension goals that will further the transitions to more sustainable practice.
7- To provide guidelines for others who want to define; measure, and
Publicize indicators of sustainability.
To achieve our aims we went through and stimulated the literature covering the different definitions of sustainable development, sustainable agriculture, Sustainable agriculture development and question of indicators, and we have studied the situation among. African countries in order to achieve our aims as following :
A) In Egypt
The development of population distribution from 1927 - 1986 has shown that proportion of rural population has decreased from 73.1% out of. total population in 1927 to 56 % in 1986 . In the same time illiteracy percent was about 50 % according to 1986 census for age I0 Years and more.
