Abstract Two field trails were carried out at El-Gemmiza Agric. Res. Station, A.R.C. during the two successive summer seasons 2000 and 2001 to study the effect of three irrigation intervals (every 20, 15 and 10 days) and three harvesting dates ( harvesting after 160, 175 and 190 days from sowing) on the yield, yield components of jute in addition to chemical composition of fibers. Results obtained can be summarized as follow:- 1-Decreased irrigation intervals to every 10 days caused a significant increases in plant height, technical length, stem diameter, green stalk yield/plant as well as per fad., fiber yield/fad., fiber length, fiber percentage, upper branching zone length, number of capsules/plant, seed index, seed yield/plant as well as per fad. 2-Delaying harvesting date from 160 to 190 days from sowing recorded a significant increase in plant height, technical length, green stalk yield/plant as well as per fad., fiber yield/fad., fiber length, fiber percentage, fiber fineness, upper branching zone length, number of capsules/plant, seed index, seed yield/plant as well as per fad. On the other hand, there were insignificant decrease in stem diameter and significant decrease in fiber fineness with delaying harvesting. 3-There was either significant increase in cellulose percentage and insignificant decrease in pectin percentage while insignificant decrease in lignin percentage with decreasing irrigation intervals to every 10 days. 4-There were significant and gradual increments in cellulose and lignin percentage with delaying harvesting date till 190 days, while there was a significant reduction in pectin percentage with the latest harvest. 5-The interaction between irrigation intervals and harvesting date were significant in all characters under study except the interaction between irrigation every 20 days and harvesting date on stem diameter. 6-There was highly significant and positive correlation between green stalk yield and each of plant height, technical length, stem diameter, fiber length and fiber percentage, also between plant height and each of technical length and fiber length. While the relationship was significant and positive between plant height and fiber percentage. 7-Highly significant and positive correlation coefficients recorded between seed yield and each of upper branching zone length, number of capsules/plant, number of seeds/capsule, seed index. In the same time, the relationship was highly significant and positive between upper branching zone length and each of number of capsules/plant, number of seeds/capsule, seed index and plant height. Also between number of capsules/plant and plant height. The correlation between number of capsules/plant and each of number of seeds/capsule and seed index was significant and positive.
