Abstract The materials used for the present study consisted of eight jute genotypes which were evaluated over six environments (combination of years and locations) in Egypt during 2000 and 2001 growing seasons. The analysis of varianc revealed highly significant differences among genotypes, environments andGxE interactions for all studied traits, indicating a wide range of variation among genotypes, environments and these genotypes exhibited differential response to environmental conditions the significant variance due to residual for all characters indicated that genotypes differed with respect to their stability suggesting that prediction would be difficult, which means that mean performance alon (mean yield) would not be appropriare Estimates of variance components, phenotypic (PCV) and genotypic)GCV) coefficients of variability and broed sense heritability) H) indicated that the four yield traits i.e, plant height and technical stem length stem diameter and green stalk yield/ plant may be used in selection index with giving more weight for green stalk yield and stem diameter for improving fiber yield / plant . The criterion, yield stability (YSi) statistic indicated that two genotypes ( UPC7716 and JRC7447) were proved to be superior in green stalk yield and this superiority was also persisted in fiber yield. Moreover these two genotypes (UPC7716 ) was superior in technical stem length . Therefore, the two genotypes ( UPC7716 and JRC7447) maintained mean perormance advantage across nearly all the environmental sampled by maintaining high level of almost all yield components and they are recommended to be released as commercial stable high yield cultivars and / or to incorporate programs aiming for producing stable high yield lines. Covariability studies indicated that the fiber yield / plant was significantly positively correlated with each of plant height and technical stem length . Also, the relationships between green stalk yield with each of plant height and technical stem length were significant and positive in direction . These redicate that the Jute breeder must give priority to selection for increased plant height and technical stem length to Increase fiber yiel
