English : HETEROSIS AND INBREEDING DEPRESSION IN SESAME

Abstract The aim of this investigation was to study combining ability and gene action for seed yield and their components in sesame. A diallel cross, without reciprocals, among six parents was done in 2000 season. Results indicated positive and significant heterobeltiosis in all characters, except height of the first capsule. Additive as well as non-additive gene actions were importnt to control the expression of all the studied characters. The GCA was greater than that of the SCA for all studied characters except capsule length and seed index. The line 178 seems to be a good combiner for most characters. Three crosses (P2 x P5, P3 x P5 and P4 x P6) showed significant effect for most of the desired characters including yield. The dominance genetic variance (H1) was more important than the additive gentic variance for plant height, height of first capsule, length of fruiting zone, number of capsules/plant and seed yield/plant in both F1 and F2. generations. Moreover, plant height, some yield component characters and seed yield/plant exhibited over-dominance in both generations. Although (h2b) was high for all characters, narrow sense heritability (h2n) was low or moderate when both were averaged over F1 and F2 generations.
