Abstract |
Protective immunization of fattening calves against Babesia (B) bovis infection was investigated using cell culture exoantigens and / or BCG vaccine. Four groups, each consisted of 3 calves were used in this study. Group (1) was vaccinated with both B. bovis exoantigens and BCG vaccine while group (2) was vaccinated with B. bovis exoantigens and group (3) was vaccinated with BCG alone. Group (4) was left as a non vaccinated control. Specific anti B. bovis antibodies in serum of calves were detected using indirect immunoflurescent technique (IFAT). Humeral immunity levels were detected in calves in groups (1&2) one week post vaccination and increased gradually. After the second dose of B. bovis exoantigens, the mean antibody titers continued to its peak at 6th week of vaccination (2,560 in group 1 and 1,706.7 in group 2).
The levels of protective immunity against B. bovis in different groups were assessed post challenge with 1x 109 virulent B. bovis infected RBCs throught production of specific antibabesial antibodies (IFA titers), parasitaemia and elimination of parasite from blood after challenge and haematocrite value represented by reduction in packed cell volume (PCV). The best protective level was detected in group (1) then group (2). Concerning to group (3), it's obvious that calves in this group were able to eliminate the parasite from blood post challenge while control group remained as carrier.
