Isolation and identification of bovine ephemeral fever (BEF) virus in Egypt

| Abstract |
During 1999-2000 an outbreak of bovine ephemeral fever (three day sickness) with high morbidity and low mortality occurred in most governorates of Egypt characterized by acute fever of short duration, stiffness and lameness, subcutaneous emphysema with reduction in milk yield. Recumbency is the obvious feature of the next order of severity, loss of swallowing reflex, bloat, ruminal stasis, constipation and excessive salivation, coma and death, abortion occurred in few cases of pregnant cows. Field strains of BEF vary in their virulence (severe or mild strains) as the nature of this disease has made it impossible to control by husbandry or other means. So the isolation and identification of the causative virus during this outbreak is required for successive development of a vaccine against the disease. In this study the virus was isolated and identified, and at the same time it was adapted to grow in both Vero and BHK21 cell line. The incubation period in experimentally infected animals is three to five days, the fever is phasic with two or more peaks 12-24 hours apart (first febrile phase 40-41.5 oC and lasts 12-24 hours). Differential leukocytic count is the most useful direct confirmatory test, if there is no neutrphilia with at least 30% as band forms, the animal does not have BEF.
