Abstract |
This investigation was conducted during the three successive seasons 98/99, 1999/2000 and 2000/2001 using six parental flax genotypes and eight crosses in F1 and F2 generations. A wide range in performance among the parental genotypes, as well as among the F1 and F2 generations was observed. The crosses showed various percentages of heterosis over mid-parents. Seven crosses exceeded mid-parents significantly for straw yield/plant and no. of fruiting branches/plant, three crosses for plant height, five crosses for technical stem length, one cross for each of no. of basal branches/plant and no. of seeds/capsule, two crosses for seed yield/plant and all crosses for both no.of capsules/plant and oil percentage. With regard to better parent seven crosses outyielded their parents for each of straw yield, no.of fruiting branches and oil percentage, one cross for each of technical stem length, no.of basal branches and seed yield/plant, five crosses for no.of capsules/plant and two crosses for 100-seed weight. The high percentage of inbreeding depression was noticed for yield in all the investigated crosses with the exception of one hybrid for straw yield and another hybrid for seed yield. Remarkable improvement occurred in straw and seed yields/plant concerning the crosses including Vaiking, Bombay and Jawhar varieties. Generally, the positive and significant heterosis and inbreeding gain were closely related in many crosses under study for some flax traits.
