Abstract 1.In the present study, a total of 76 soil samples and 191 faecal samples were collected from sheep farms in different provinces in Egypt and examined for the presence of CI.chauvoei by different methods. It was found that fluorescent antibody technique was a superior method for detection, while the animal inoculation method is the most reliable fro isolation. 2. Eleven strains of CI.chauvoei were isolated from soil samples (14.5 percent) and sixty-five strains from faecal samples (34percent). The highest percentage of soil contamination was in Sakha and that of faecal contamination was in El-Kassasin. 3. CLINICAL and POST-MORTEM findings of sheep experimentally infected with different strains of CI.chauvoei were investigated. All animlas showed similar clinical pictures and post-mortem lesions. 4. The immunizing power of different vaccines prepared from bovine, ovine and faecal strains of CI.chauvoei was studied in guinea-pigs and sheep. Vaccinated animlas produced complete immunity against challenge with homologous and heterologous starins. 5. The protective immunity of vaccines prepared from bovine and ovine strains CI.chauvoei was studied by using plate agglutination test. Serum of each animal gave similar titre of antibodies against homologous and heterologous antigens. 6. Vaccination of guinea=pigs and sheep with bovine and ovine vaccines produced complete protection against wide range of CI.chauvoei starins. Vaccine prepared from bovine strain produced protection against the same bovine as well as another bovine and ovine strains. At the same time, vaccine prepared from ovine strain was likely to confer protection against infection with the same ovine strain as well as another ovine and bovine strains. 7. It was found that CI.chauvoei strains isolated from cases of blacking either from sheep or cattle can be used for the preparation of CI.chauvoei vaccine. Further more, strain isolated from faeces of apparently normal sheep could also be used for the same purpose.
