English : performance of diallel crosses among six wheat parents

Abstract The objective of the present study was to investigate heterosis, general and specific combining ability and inbreeding depression for yield and its components in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) half diallel crosses in F1 and F2 of six bread wheat genotypes, viz ., Giza 168, Line5, Gemmiza 7, Line 35, Line 57 and Line 54. Significant heterotic effects were detected for moderate number of hybrids of all characters. Significant positive heterosis was detected for tallness (8-17%), spikes/plant (9-39%), kernels/spike (4-19%), 100 kernels weight (8-21%) and grain yield/plant (12-34%). Both general and specific combining ability were significant for all studied characters. Most of estimates of GCA/SCA exceeded unity, but were not significant to show the probability of equal importance of both additive and non-additive gene actions. The parents, Gemmiza 7 and line 35 were the best combiners for grain yield/plant, beside at least one of the yield components. Meanwhile, S C A effects for grain yield were found in the crosses between (P1 xP2), (P2 xP5), (P3 xP4 ) ) and (P1x P5) in the F1 were the most promising crosses. Great association could be shown between performance, heterosis and specific combining ability effects. Inbreeding depression were in different directions (positive and negative), in all characters. This may be attributed to the dominance type of gene action controlling these characters, especially in number of spikes/plant and number of kernels. Potence ratio indicated different types of dominance levels, for all characters. Positive overdomainance were reported for grain yield /plant, kernels/spike 100 kernel weigh, and partial dominance was obtained for spikes/plant.
