English : heterosis and combining ability for some bread wheat crosses

Abstract A half diallel cross was practiced among six genetically diversed bread wheat (Triticum aestivum,) genotypes. The F1 of the fifteen crosses and the six parents were grown in a field experiment at Ismalia. Data revealed that the mean squares of genotypes and crosses were highly significant for all studied characters. Meanwhile, the mean squares of parents were significant for three out of the six traits, i.e, plant height, days to maturity and number of spikes/plant. Positive and negative heterosis over the better parents were detected for all studied characters indicating that parental genotypes were genetically diversed. The analysis of variance for combining ability showed that mean squares due to general (GCA) and specific (SCA) combining ability, were generally significant for all studied characters reflecting the importance of both additive and dominance gene effects in the inheritance of these characters. In addition, GCA/SCA ratio was more than unity for plant height and kernel weight; while, it was less than unity for maturity date, number of spikes/ plant, number of kernels/spike and grain yield/plant proving that both additive and dominance genes, respectively, have considerable roles in the inheritance of these characters. In general, cultivar Sakha 93 was a good combiner for early maturity, kernel weight and grain yield/plant; Giza 168 for grain yield/plant. Gemmeiza 7 for plant height, early maturity, and kernel weight. Besides, Sakha 69 was a good combiner for number of kernels/spike. These results seem important to wheat breeding program in making the proper decision when initiating a crossing plan.
