English : PHYSIOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF GRAIN YIELD VARIATION IN SHORT AND MEDIUM DURATION CULTIVARS OF RICE GROWN UNDER WATER STRESS CONDITIONS
Arabic : الخصائص الفسيولوجية للتباين فى محصول الحبوب لأصناف الأرز قصيرة ومتوسطة العمر النامية تحت ظروف الشد الرطوبى
Abstract Two field experiments were conducted on rice at the Experimental Farm of rice Research and Training Center (RRTC), Sakha, Kafr Sheikh, Egypt, during 2002 and 2003 summer seasons to study the physiological aspects of eight short and medium duration cultivars of rice grown under water stress condition and the relationship of different characters with grain yield. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The results showed that Sakha 101, Giza 178, Giza 182 and E. Yasmine rice cultivars exhibited larger days number to panicle initiation (PI) and 50% heading. Sakha 101 and Giza 178 recorded the highest values of chlorophyll content, while, E. Yasmine recorded the lowest values in both flag and second leaves. Dry matter production and leaf area index (LAI) was greater in cultivars bearing more productive tillers i.e. Sakha 101, Sakha 104 and Giza 178. Sakha 104 recorded the highest grain yield, accompanied with the maximum values for number of tillers and panicles/m2, as well as harvest index. However, the aromatic cultivar (E. Yasmine) gave the lowest grain yield, less number of tillers and panicles per hill, less sink capacity, lowest panicle density and lowest harvest index. LAI, number of tillers/hill, number of panicles/hill, sink capacity, harvest index and shoot dry matter both at complete heading and at harvest stages had positive and highly significant correlation coefficients with grain yield (ranging between r = 0.903 and 0.964). However, shoot dry matter at booting stage and panicle grain weight had positive and only significant correlation with grain yield (r = 0.822 and 0.795, respectively).
