English : Effect of irrigation intervals and potassium fertilization rates on some bread and durum wheat varieties in Upper Egypt

Abstract To study the effect of irrigation at 3 different intervals (9, 18 and 27 days), under three potassium levels (24, 36 and 48 kg K/fed.) on growth, yield and yield components of two varieties from durum wheat Triticum durum (Sohag 2 and Beni Suef 3) and two varieties from bread wheat Triticum durum (Giza 165 and Alnielien) in Upper Egypt, a field experiment was conducted during the two successive growing seasons of 1999/2000 and 2000/2001 on clay loam soil of El-Mattaena Agriculture Research Station, Qena Province, Upper Egypt. The results indicated that decreasing irrigation intervals to 9 days enhanced the vegetative growth of wheat, i.e. plant height values and biological yield/fed. Values of 1000-grain weight were high also with this interval. On the other hand, increasing irrigation interval up to 27 days led to reduction in all studied characteristics. Irrigation at 18 days interval produced the highest values of No. of spikes/m2, number of kernels per spike and values of grain yield (ton/fed.) in the two studied seasons. Increasing potassium fertilization rate up to 48 kg K2O/fed.led to an increase in the values of plant height, biological yield, 1000-grains weight and number of spikes/m2 in the two studied seasons. The highest values of grain yield (ton/fed.) at the two studied seasons resulted from the use of 36-kg K2O/fed. for all varieties with the exception of Giza165 variety in the two studied seasons. Giza 165 variety showed significant increase in grain yield with the use of potassium up to 48 kg K2O/fed. in the two studied seasons. The highest values of grain yield as an average all experimental varieties were obtained when irrigation was applied at 18 days interval accompanied by using 36 kg K2O/fed.
