Abstract |
Two field experiments were carried out at the farm of Nubaria Agricultural Research Station during two successive crops (maize and wheat), one each season,( summer 2004 followed by winter 2004 / 2005) to study the impact of compost application on some soil parameters, bioavailability of macro and micronutrients and crop yield. NPK mineral fertilizers application was added at the rate of zero, ½ R, ¾ R and recommended (R). R for maize was 120/45/24 kg fed-1 and for wheat it was 100/45/24 kg fed-1 as (N/P2O5/K2O). The rates of compost application were 0, 10, 20 and 30 metric ton fed-1 applied once before maize planting. Soil properties of bulk density and penetration resistance decreased; hydraulic conductivity and infiltration increased with increasing the rates of compost application. The grains and straw yield of both maize and wheat crops as well as protein yield markedly increased as a result of compost , mineral NPK fertilizer or their combinations application especially their combinations . Increases in maize grains, wheat straw and wheat grains were 4.0 and 4.2 and 4.5 folds, respectively. No clear effect for application in both compost or mineral NPK on the identification of fatty acids in maize grains and amino acids in wheat grains was observed. Application of compost combined with the recommended dose of mineral fertilizers caused a substantial increase in soil nutrients bioavailability and enhanced the uptake of macro and micronutrients by maize and wheat. The highest uptake of macro and micronutrients by both maize and wheat grains and straw was , to a great extent, as a result of the highest dose of both compost and mineral NPK together. It was noticed that , application of compost, generally, decreased the accumulation of Pb and Ni in the studied organs of maize and wheat, especially in wheat grains where no detection of Pb, Ni and Cd occurred
