Abstract |
Two field trials were conducted in 1998 and 1999 to study the influence of vesicular arbuscular micorrhizae (VAM) inoculation on disease incidence of sorghum downy mildew (SOM) in maize and S{ldan grass as well as grain and green yield of both crops The results showed that application of VAM reduced SOM infection from 505 to 08% and from 33.3 to 17% in maize plants in 1998 and 1999. respectively In Sudan grass. infection percent reduced from 60 to 5.5% in 1998 and from 28.6 to 3.3% in 1999
Maize seeds treated with vitavax thiram revealed that the fungicide did not affect significantly SOM incidence by VAM inoculation, but affected the VA mycorrhizal infection and spore density in maize roots as well as in the soil.
Maize and Sudan grass green yield were significantly increased
due to VAM inoculation regardless to the presence or absence of the fungicide (vitavax thiram) or the disease infection. On the other hand, inoculation of VAM in both crops did not Improve N. p, K concentrations in shoots and soil. Results from the two experiments conducted in 1998 & 1999 suggested that SOM suppressed by VAM colonization may be caused mainly by the competition between the pathogen and VAM for infection sites in the root system
