| Abstract |
This study was conducted in the Animal Production Departement, College of Agriculture, King Saud University, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, through four seasons, from winter 1988 to the end of fall 1989. Eggs represented: two commercial egg laying strains (Hisex and Shaver), three age groups (20-28, 29-45, 46-78 weeks of age), four seasons (winter, spring, summer and fall), two storage temperatures (5° and 23-24° C) and four storage times (fresh, 1, 2 and 3 weeks). The objectives of this study were to determine: The effect of strain of layers, season and layer age on: fresh egg weight (FEW), egg weight grades (EWG), egg index (EI), shell thickness (STM), egg surface area (SA), shell weight (SW), shell weight percent (SWP), shell weight/cm2 (SW/SA), shell density (SD), egg shape (SHP), egg cleanliness (CL) and egg soundness (SOD). The effect of strain of layers, season, layer age, storage temperature and storage time on: egg weight loss percent, albumin height (AH), Haugh unit grades (HUG), yolk index (YI), yolk color (YC), blood spots (BS), meat spots (MS) and air cell (AC). The results indicated that, Shaver strain was significantly higher in: EW, EWG, STM, SA, SW, SW/SA and YC, while Hisex strain was significantly higher in: SHP, HUG and YI. There was no significant effect for strain the other studied traits. Season had a significant effect on all studied traits. Layer age had a significant effect on all studied traits. Storage conditions: cold storage was significantly better in all studied traits under this category. Storage time had a significant effect on all studied traits.
