Abstract |
Two experiments were conducted on rabbits, where sugar beet tops (SBT) was evaluated in two forms either as silage (SBTS) or as hay (SBTH) in comparison to berseem silage (BS) and hay (BH). In the 1st experiment, four groups, each contained 4 mature of male New Zealand white rabbits, 6 month old, were utilized, Each group was fed, sole feed, of the following four treated as a one roughages: SBTS, BS, SBTH and BH, to determine the chemical , composition and nutritive value. In the 2nd experiment, five equal groups of growing mixed sexes New Zealand rabbits, 6 weeks old, 10 rabbits each were used. The first group was fed the commercial basal diet (C) . In groups 2, 3, 4 and 5th of rabbits, diets of SBTS, BS SBTH and BH were offered in combination with the commercial diet which represented 60% of the recommended allowance and the other 40% representing the tested roughages.
Feed conversion, digestibility nitrogen were balance and determined during the 10 weeks experimental period. At the end of this experiment four rabbits from each group were slaughtered for carcass information and meat analysis. Microbial activity in cecal content and some blood parameters were determined. the major results obtained showed that SBTS had more CP and EE than the SBTH which had more of the other nutrients.
Silage made from sugar beet tops and berseem were of good quality as judged by pH which was 3.8 and 4.4 for SBTS and BS, respectively. The highest digestibility (P<0.05) of DM, OM, CP, CF and NFE was found for SBTS and BH, and the least was in BS. While EE digestibility was greatest in BH followed by BS, SBTS and the least was SBTH. THe best SV and DCP was found in SBTS and SBTH compared with BS and BH . Body weight for rabbits fed (C) diet was significantly heavier (P<0.05) compared with the other groups. Almost the same body weight was found in SBTS or SBTH groups.
The higher (P<0.05) feed consumption was (118.7 and 111.7 g) for rabbits fed BH or BS containing diet, while lower was (99.8 and 99.5 g) for rabbits fed SBTS and SBTH containing diet. The highest (P<0.05) average daily gain (ADG) was (26.1 g) for C-diet while the lowest ADG was (22.8 g) for SBTS. Containing diet. The same ADG was obtained for both groups fed SBTH and BH-containing diet.
No significant differences nutrient were detected in digestibilities among basal and compination diets.
The nutritive values (SV or TDN, on DM basis) were nearly the same for the experimental diet. However, DCP value was higher (P<0.05) for both SBTS and C-Diets compared with BS-containing diet. The nitrogen balance was higher (P<0.05) in rabbits fed C- Diet. However, no significant differences were obtained between the other four groups. Dressing percentage, carcass characteristics and meat composition did not differ significantly. Lungs and Kidneys weight However, were highly significant (P<0.05) in groups fed SBTH and BH containing diets. However, they were quiet similar in group fed C, SBTS and BS-containing diets.
The highest signinficant (P<0.05) of ammonia-N and VFA in Cecale contents was found for rabbits fed BS followed by BH, SBTS, C and SBTH, containing diets. Diets containing SBTS had quiet similar values as that in SBTH-Diet. Serum cholesterol, uric acid and GPT show significant (P<0.05) differences diets of C, SBTS, BS and SBTH. A significant decrease (P<0.05) in glucose was noticed in group fed BH containing diet.
