Abstract |
This investigation was carried out at EL-Giza Agric. Res. Station in 2001 and 2002 seasons to evaluate 15 advanced breeding lines of sesame for agronomic characters and chemical composition.
Results showed significant differences among genotypes in all studied characters in both seasons. MGS23-2, MGS23-6, MGS13-5 and MGS25-8 were significantly taller than the other genotypes. MGS12-1 and MG S36-5 recorded lower capsule height. MGS25-8 and MGS13-5 had a significantly longer fruiting zone, greatest number of capsules/pl and the highest yield/pl. MGS25-8 and MGS13-5 were higher than other genotypes in seed and oil yields / fed in both seasons.
Considering agronomic characters and chemical composition, MGS15-10, MGS36-5 and MGS24-9 showed the longest radical length. MGS15-10 and MGS14 –7 had a significantly taller seedlings. MGS14 –7, MGS36-5 and MGS15-10 recorded greatest dry matter weight. Seed index varied from 3.35g for MGS25-8 to 4.27g for MGS15-10. Seed coat / whole ratio ranged from 13.36 to 17.98. Percentage of oil content, crude protein and carbohydrate contents were 49.58 to 53.83%, 21.12 to 25.05%, 10.96 to 12.19%, respectively. Major fatty acids comprised plamitic, stearic, olic, and linoleic. Oleic and linoleic acids ranged from 38.2 to 44.9%, from 39.6 to 44.4%, respectively.
The present study suggests that MGS25-8 and MGS13-5 could be considered promising line, since they are high yielding in both seed and oil.
