The relative importance of information sources to farmers in the field of producing and marketing Potatoes crop in Kafr El-Ziat district El-Gharbia governorate

Abstract |
The study aimed mainly at determining the relative importance of information sources to farmers in field of producing and marketing potatoes crop through four stages (Pre-harvesting, harvesting, Post-harvesting, and storing), as well as in field of producing and marketing potatoes crop as awhole. In addition, determining the degree of differences between information sources of farmers in the four studied stages, finally determining the differences in the relative importance of information sources to farmers through these stages.
Data were collected by using personal interviews from arandom sample amounted to 103 respondents representing about 50% from the total number of potatoes farmers in the two studied villages (Kasr Nasr El-Deen and Delebshan) Kafr El-Ziat district, El- Gharbia Governorate.
Frequencies, Percentages, and friedman analysis of variance by ranks were used for analyzing data statistically.
The results of this study revealed that:
First: personal experience as self source of information to respondents took the first position in all stages under study, followed by agricultural extension agent (AEA). who come in the second, fourth, fifth, and third position regarding the four studied stages respectively, the unofficial sources of information such as neighbours and friends, family and relatives which took the leading positions ranged between the second and seventh position in all stages. While, radio programs, extension publications and television programs come in the latest position in the most of studied stages. Some personal sources of information like owners of big frigerators, whole -salers, and exporters took leading position in some stages according to the nature of their work in these stages.
Second: in the field of producing and marketing potatoes crop as awhole, personal experience, agricultural extension agent (AEA), neighbours and friends, family and relatives took the position from the first to the fourth orderly, it means that unofficial sources of information took the leading position for respondents. On the other hand, Mass-media sources as, television programs, extension publications, and radio programs took the fifth, tenth, and twelfth position respectively, which consider almost late, while some institutional, official, and specification sources of information as agricultural cooperative, cooperative of potatoes' producers, administration of agriculture, and marketing cooperatives took the latest position, In some studied stages no one of respondents choose it.
Third: There is a significant differences between the farmers information sources and the four studied stages at 0.01 level, which meaning that there is effect on these stages resulting from information sources.
These results should be taken in considration at planning the extension programs, by using numerous and multivarious sources of information according the nature of every stage of these programs, especially during dissemination of technical recommendations concerning producing and marketing potatoes crop.
