Abstract |
Farmers' knowledge and practices related to some technical recommendations concerning Exported potato in some specialized villages in Egypt. The study was carried out in Beheira, Gharbiya, and Monoufia for having the highest production level, and largest number of exporting potato farmers.
Data were collected by personal interviews using a pretested questionnaire from 120 farmers; a Systematic random sample technique was used to determine the respondents. The questionnaire was coded and data were statistically analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations.
Specified objectives included the following:
I- To study some personal-economical, and communicational characteristics of the respondents.
2- To determine respondents' knowledge and Practices levels towards some Technical recommendations concerning harvesting, sorting, and packaging of the exported potato.
To determine the problems and constrains facing the respondents in applying the Technical recommendations concerning harvesting, sorting, and packaging of the exported potato The main results of the study were as follows.
1- Most of the respondents were illiterate 41.7%.
2- Farm size mean was 3.17 feddans (s.d252), and 49.2% of the interviewees have farm size less than (3) feddans.
3- Results indicated that the average potato yield was 9.67 ton/feddan
4 Results showed that about 77% of the interviewees have low knowledge levels of the Technical recommendations, concerning exported potato, and 66% showed interest in knowing important Technical recommendations concerning harvesting, sorting, and packaging of the exported potato.
5- Results revealed that 76.7% of the respondents depend on their personal experience in producing potato as an information source.
6- Results showed that 61.7% of the respondents indicated that the best way of getting Technical recommendations concerning harvesting, sorting, and packaging of the exported potato comes through exchanging visitation with Extension Agent.
7- Results revealed. low practice level in applying protection means against Phthorimaea Operciella for 68.3% of the respondents, in timing of taking thy green leaves for 62.5% of the respondents, and in applying and knowing the purpose of potato dry curing.
8- Results showed that 80% of the respondents indicated that the most important problem facing potato farmers is (A) high prices of production means, followed by (B) low potato marketing prices 65.8%.
