English : The effect of some personal and family variables on rural women's knowledge regarding the prod¬uction recommendation of Potato crop

Abstract This study was carried out with the aim of determining rural women's level of knowledge regarding the production of potato crop, determining the effect of some personal and family variables on the knowledge level of rural women, identifying the utilized and preferred information sources of rural women and their importance. Data was collected by personal interview for a systematic random sample amounting to 220 of potato Farmer's wives in 4 Governorates which are: Giza, Monofiya, Gharbia and El Beheria. A pretested questionnaires were used to collect the study's data. Percentages, means, standard deviation, variation coefficient, simple correlation. Multiple regression, and the Kendall Coefficient of concordance were used to analyze the data which revealed the following results: The Knowledge level of the interviewees regarding the production recommendation of potato crop was high. There was a significant relationship on .01 level between rural women's level of knowledge and the three independent variables which were: Size of farm, the number of potatoe's cultivated years, and the number of years in which rural women contributed in cultivating potato crop. The study revealed that these three variables together explained 20 % of the variation in the knowledge level of rural women regarding the production recommendations of potato crop. Also the study revealed that rural women utilized 10 sources of information about potato crop, and there was a high agreement between what is rural women utilized and what is they preferred from Information sources. Although there In still need to search the reasons which prevent rural women from utilizing the preferred sources, so the study recommends that researches in the future must be conducted to reveal the reasons behind that. Also the study recommends that extension should be offered to the rural women who have small size farm, or little experience in cultivating potato crop.
