Abstract Two field trials were conducted at Ismailia Experimental Research station, during 2002 and 2003 seasons to investigate the response some peanut genotypes to intercropping with sesame. The intercropping patterns were in the ratio of 100% peanut + 50% sesame, i.e (1) intercropping one peanut ridges and leaving the other one (2) intercropping two peanut ridges and leaving the other two (3) intercropping sesame with all peanut ridges at 40 cm distance. Peanut genotypes were Giza 6 , Ismailia 1 (bunch type) and a new line Introduction 623 (running type). The results obtained indicated that : All growth characters, yield components and total pods yield/fed. Of peanut was significantly affected by peanut genotypes. On the contrary, sesame growth characters, yield and oil percentage were not significantly affected by peanut genotypes, except total seed yield/fed. Introduction 623 produced the highest values, followed by Ismaila 1, than Giza 6, whereas the lowest values recorded by Giza 5 var. Growth, yield components and total of peanut and sesame significantly affected by intercropping patterns. Intercropping sesame and peanut in 2 : 2 pattern produced the highest yield for peanut and sesame, compared with the other intercropping patterns. Pure stand of peanut of out yielded all intercrossing patterns. The interaction between peanut varieties and intercropping systems had significant effect on number of pods/ plant, weight of 100 pods and weight of seed/ 100 pods and pods yield/fed of peanut, as well as number of capsules/ plant and seed yield/ fed of sesame. The highest averages of these characters were obtained when peanut Introduction 623 was used and 2 : 2 intercropping system was followed, whereas the lowest values were recorded when peanut Giza 5 var. was used and intercropping sesame with all peanut ridges at 40 cm apart. Data on competition relationship indicated that intercropping peanut with sesame at the ratios 2 : 2 and 1 : 1 systems produced higher land equivalent ratio (L.E.R=1.70) in the combined data of both seasons. The relative crowding coefficient . Economic evaluation of intercropping systems indicated that 2 : 2 pattern gave the highest values of total income (4809.76 L.E.), compared with peanut pure stand (3381.00 L.E.) and net return was (1428.76 L.E.) in combined data of both seasons. It could be concluded that intercropping sesame with peanut in 2 : 2 pattern (100% peanut + 50% sesame) and using Introduction 623 peanut variety produced higher net return 1428.76 L.E., compared with growing peanut as solid crop .
