Abstract |
This study aims to identify some characteristics of new wheat varieties farmers, their acceptance levels of these recommended varieties, the correlation between their acceptance levels and some independent variables associated with them, and the contribution of these independent variables in interpreting variation in their acceptance levels. The study also was interested in exploring those farmers' production constrains of these recommended wheat varieties, and their suggestions on this regard The study was conducted in some villages within the Gharbia and Katy El-Sheik governorates) The sample size was 120 farmers representing 10% selected randomly from wheat farmers list through the agricultural cooperatives of (Bishbish Awwal (El-Nlahalla FI-Kobra district), and Aryamoun (Kafr El-Sheik district) villages respectively). Data were collected using personal interview questionnaire during MaytJune1999. For analyzing data the arithmetic means, histogram, frequencies, percentages. step-wise and simple correlation analysis were utilized.
Findings revealed that there were a significant positive correlation at 0.01 level between the selected farmers' acceptance degree of the new wheat varieties and their educational level, degree of exposing to the agricultural information sources, attitude degree towards agriculture extension, and extension contact. There was a significant positive correlation at 0.05 level between the selected farmers' acceptance degree of the new wheat recommended varieties and their ages, perception degree of extension work. Variables related to the selected farmer's educational level and their ages were contributed by 27.67% in interpreting the total variation in their acceptance degree of the recommended wheat varieties. Finding also revealed that there were some constrains facing farmers during their production of these new varieties, which could be classified in three groups as follow: Constrains related to smut (30%) and rusts (22.5%) diseases. Constrains related to variety aspects as plant lodging (13,3%), fewness of plant tiller (17.5%), plant shattering (3.3%), and fewness of straw (1.7%). Constrains related to managerial part, as shortage of amount of the recommended seed varieties available during the cultivation season (267%), and its high prices (17.5%).
The selected farmers also provided five suggestions to over come these mentioned constrains as follows: Providing high resistance wheat varieties to smut and rusts diseases (358%). Availability of the recommended wheat varieties during the cultivation season (292%). Increasing extension activities regarding production information of these new varieties (17.5%). Decreasing the prices of the recommended wheat new varieties (15.8%). Preventing repeating the same new variety for two following seasons in one plot area (1.7%).
The study also stress the importance of giving such attention through research for cutting off these constrains facing farmers in the production of these new varieties, and to consider their mentioned suggestions in future research when developing new seed varieties of this strategic important crop, Equally as important regarding the part of agricultural extension, to increase their communicational contact with farmers about diffusing new wheat varieties production recommendation to guarantee farmers' credibility, and achieving a high yield of this important strategic crop.
