Abstract |
Fifteen males calves representing Baladi (B) and its crosses with the Abondance (A) and Tarentaise (T) were used to study fattening performance and meat production- related traits. DM, TDN and DCP intake for B were higher than for A X B or T X B. the total body weight gain and average daily gain for AXB calves were significantly (P<0.05) higher than for TXB calves which in turn, were significantly (P<0.05) higher than Baladi calves. The concentration of serum total protein (P<0.05) was higher in Baladi and AXB calves than TXB calves. While, that for serum glucose, total1ipids and concentration of Albumin did not differ between the three groups. Feed cost/kg WG for AXB calves was lower than for B or TXB calves. AXB calves recorded higher economical efficiency than B or TXB calves. The AXB. had higher values for HW, BL, HG and BB significantly (P<0.05) as compared with B and TXB calves. W.H.C. values for B and TXB calves were significantly higher (P<0.05) than for AXB calves, PH, color intensity and tenderness values did not differ significantly between genotype groups. The content of CP on DM basis in eye muscle for AXB and TXB calves were significantly higher (P<0.05) than for B. Dressing percentage, boneless meat weight and percentage together with meat percent and bone percentage did not significantly differ between the three genotypes.
Key words: Body weight, Economic efficiency, Baladi, Abondance, Tarentaise, meat production related traits.
